Prioritizing Your Time Online

Many people start in business trying to bootstrap their budget and their time.  There are so many things to do and only so much time to get everything done.  This leaves you making priorities and sometimes leaving things out.  Now a website is so vital, this should be your first priority.  Secondly, you need to decide on a platform to better relate to your customers in an informal way.  Blogs, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc… the list goes on for different platforms now-a-days, but you need to prioritize!

People are moving toward an easy means of communication, are they not?  For example, you could catch me walking down the street talking on my Bluetooth while I’m texting, Tweeting, and updating my Facebook status.  I will look for a remote for 10 minutes before I get up and change the channel on the TV.  I often wonder, “What my daughter will be doing in 10 years to make things more convenient than now?”

Profiting With Gift Cards

Have you become more comfortable giving and receiving gift cards in recent years?  According to a recent survey by the National Retail Federation (NRF), you are.  In their fourth annual Gift Card Survey, the NRF found that 95% of adult survey respondents either received or purchased a gift card. - a 24% increase over the previous year’s results.  The primary drivers for the growth of gift cards are that they’re easy to buy, they’re more socially acceptable gifts these days, and they ensure the recipient gets exactly what he or she wants.

1.  What equipment you do you use?
I use Canon 5D bodies with a variety of canon lenses.  My favorite lens right now is my 50mm 1.4.

2.  How long have you been shooting?
I have been shooting about 10 years.  I went full pro about 4 years ago and haven’t looked back.

3.  Where are you located?
I am located in Kernersville, NC.  It’s the little dot between Greensboro and Winston.

4.  What type of photography do you take?
I specialize in engagements, bridals and weddings, but I love shooting anything.  I think it’s important to push your self out of your comfort zone regularly.

5.  Price range of events?
I have pre-designed packages that begin at $2600 and range up to $4600.

6.  When did you notice that you had passion for photography?
“The passion” for photography slowly evolved in me I think.  I am a very sentimental person.  I found that over time, I strived to capture more and more in my images; images that evoke emotion and sentiment.  That’s pretty much how it started for me.

7.  Is there anything unique about what you do?
I believe what makes me unique is the way I utilize both natural and artificial light.  I have also been told (by clients) that I have a unique gift for capturing all the details of the day, the small things that can be overlooked.

8.  What’s the funniest thing that ever happened during a shoot?
OHHH!!! I have this one hands down!!  While my assistant and I were scouting a location in which I had a wedding, I noticed there were dips all in the area I wanted to shoot.  So, on the day of I was very cautious and told the bride and groom to watch their step.  I was so caught up with watching where they were going that I forgot to watch where I was going.  And it happened, like straight out of AFHV.  I was saying “watch your step here” and “watch where you are stepping”. Right in mid-sentence, I stepped right into one of the dips.  It was a hilarious mess of arms, legs and cameras flying.  Nobody, including myself was able to maintain composure.  We all about doubled over laughing.  Thankfully nothing was broken equipment wise and I was just painfully embarrassed. ;)

9.  What’s the scariest thing that ever happened during a shoot?
I have been fortunate that I have never been in a really scary situation.
I did do a dress shot once that made me nervous.  In the spirit of always trying and doing different things, I took a brides dress outside (with her permission) to take some shots.  I hung the dress in a tree and as it happened, it was a windy day.  As the dress swayed in the wind, my heart was in my throat, but it made the most awesome shot.  I shot quickly and returned the dress unscathed.

10.  How many events do you photograph each year?
About 15-20

11.  Have you had to change anything to adjust in current economic times?
Admittedly 2009 will be a bit slow for many, including myself.
When I find myself with nothing pressing to do, I use the time to my advantage.  I invest in myself with learning new things and perfecting current projects.  I research new products to ensure I am offering the best to my clients.  I focus on making my clients experience the best it can be with me.
Above all, in times like this, I feel it more important than ever to focus on building value in what I do.

12.  Describe your shooting style?
My shooting style is primarily documentary.  With that said though, I don’t like to restrict myself to a specific style.  I enjoy aspects of many different styles.  I like to think that I am a mix of many different styles.

13.  What advice to you have for new photographers?
If real estate is location, location, location, then photography is image, image, image.
More times than not, your website is the first thing a potential client will see.  And as the saying goes, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.
PhotoBiz has and will play a key role in the success of my business.  I have been with photobiz for years and have been beyond impressed with them from day one!  The custom options and special features they offer are fantastic.  And the customer service ROCKS!!  Best of all, the ease of use saves me valuable time.

14.  Where do you find inspiration?
Anywhere and everywhere!  Everywhere I go I see potential images.  I think that most photographers can relate when I say, it’s both a blessing and a curse.  My husband refers to it as “photographer goggles”
I can look through a Southern Living magazine at furniture and be inspired.
Inspiration is everywhere if you are looking for it.
