How to set up a Facebook Business Page

Facebook is one of the most popular social media outlets available, and Facebook Business Pages are a great free tool for promoting your business on the web. In this tutorial, you will learn how to create your own Facebook Business Page.

Stats as of November 2011:

  • Around 850 Million active users on Facebook.
  • More time is spent on Facebook than: Google, Yahoo, MSN, Bing and YouTube; COMBINED!

Step 1. Creating your Facebook Business Page

The first step to creating a Facebook Business Page is to go to http://www.facebook.com/pages/create, which will allow you to select the type of business you want to create the page for. You can also access this page by clicking on “Create a Page” in the footer section of any Facebook page, or by clicking on the “Create a Page” link underneath the sign-up form on Facebook.com.

After you have set up the general information for your Facebook Page, you will be able to access the page at any time by logging into your personal Facebook account, and then selecting “Use Facebook as Page” from the drop-down menu in the upper right corner, or by selecting your Facebook Business Page from the left column of your Home screen. When you’ve accessed your Facebook Business page, you can begin customizing it.

Step 2. Customizing your Facebook Business Page

The first thing that you can do to customize your Facebook Business Page is to add a unique Profile Picture, and to add Filmstrip images to your page.

  • A Profile Picture is an image that will display to your fans on Facebook, and it also functions as a visual representation of your company on your Facebook Business Page.

Tip:

Maximum Profile Picture dimensions on Facebook Pages are 180px wide by 540px high, and the thumbnail for your Profile picture has a maximum dimension of 180px wide by 180px high. Keep these dimensions in mind when designing and/or selecting your Facebook Page’s Profile Picture.

A good idea for your Profile Picture would be to make sure to add your business logo, some information about what your company offers, your geographical location, etc. This will help you utilize the unique dimensions of the Profile Picture, as well as provide important information to your Fans.

  • Filmstrip Images are five images that are displayed at the top of your Facebook Business Page. Filmstrip images will appear as the latest five images you have uploaded to your Facebook Business Page. As an administrator of the Facebook Business Page, you can select what images appear in your filmstrip, however you do not have control over the order the images appear in since the order of the images is randomly generated each time the page is viewed.

Tip:

Tip: Filmstrip Images are shown at a size of 97×68 pixels, however you can upload images as large as 970×680 pixels for a larger photo to appear when a visitor clicks on it.

Once you have added images to your page, if you would like for a particular image not to appear in the Filmstrip images, you can hover over the image you wish to delete, and click the “X” icon that appears on the image.

Tip

A great habit to get into is Watermarking photos that you upload to your Facebook Business Page. You can also tag your watermark on your images with your Facebook Business Page name as well.

Another way to customize your Facebook Business Page is to customize which section of your Page is the Default Landing Tab.

For example, if you have set up Facebook Fan Gated Content for your Facebook Business Page, then you can adjust the Default Landing Tab for your visitors to see the tab you have set up when they visit your Facebook Business Page.

In this example, setting the Default Landing Tab to “Welcome”, will display the custom Facebook Fan Gated Content when someone visits the Facebook Business Page.

Step 3. Adding Content to your Facebook Business Page

The next thing  you can add to your Facebook Business page is engaging content. If you post content on your Facebook Business page that is engaging and relevant to your Fans, then your posts are more likely to receive recognition from your Facebook fans through the use of “Likes“, and “Shares“.

One of the first things you can do to add informative content would be to customize the Information section of your Facebook Business Page.

To do so, from your Facebook Business page, click on the Edit Page link, and then click on the Basic Information link from the column on the left of the page. This will take you to the editor for your page’s basic information, where you can enter the address, hours of operation, description, and contact information for your business.

Tip

You can add clickable links within your “About” section of your Facebook Business Page. This will allow you to place a link to your website directly from your Facebook Business Page, and this link will be visible within the left column of your page at all times.

There are many ways to create engaging and effective posts on your Facebook Business Page. Here are some tips for posting effectively:

  • Be as concise as possible, while also conveying your message.
  • Provide Value to your Fans by posting links, media and information that is relevant to them.
  • Encourage sharing in your posts.
  • Include a Call to Action for your Fans in your posts, for example, you could pose a relevant question and ask your Fans to “Like” or “Comment” with their answers.

As an administrator of your Facebook Business Page, you can also monitor posts on your Facebook Business page by hovering over the small gear icon to the right of posts by your Fans, and selecting to either Delete Post, Hide Post or Report as Abuse.

  • Delete Post: Deletes the post from your Facebook Business Page.
  • Hide Post: Hides the post so that it does not appear on your Facebook Business Page.
  • Report as Abuse: This is to report a post or the person who posted it to Facebook if they have posted something on your Facebook Business Page that you consider abusive.

You can also delete your own posts by hovering over the small “X” icon to the right of any posts you have made to your Facebook Business Page.

4. Adding Apps and Social Plugins

Another way to customize your Facebook Business page is to utilize the various Applications that are available. For example, if you would like to integrate other Social media platforms such as Twitter into your Facebook Business page, you can add the Twitter App to your page, which will allow you to share your Tweets on your Facebook Business Page.

Other Applications are used to aid in the customization of your page. For example, you can use apps such as Static HTML to your page, which will allow you to add HTML code, CSS and Javascript coding into your Facebook Business page.

You can also use Facebook’s Social Plugins feature, which allows you to integrate your Facebook Business Page with other websites through a variety of plugins such as the Facebook Like Box, or the Facebook Like Button.

To utilize Facebook’s Social Plugins, click on the Edit button on your Facebook Business Page, and then click on the Resources link from the left hand column, from there, click on the link for Social Plugins. This will take you to a page where you can select the plug-in you would like to use, and customize the plug-in with your Facebook Business Page information.

5. Promoting your Facebook Business Page

The final step in creating your Facebook Business page would be to invite people to visit the page and “Like” it. Once a visitor “Likes” your Facebook Business page, then information you post on your Facebook Page will be visible in that person’s News Feed, which will increase the likelihood that your posts will be viewed, “Liked” and “Shared”.

There are several ways to promote visitors to come to your Facebook Business Page and “Like” it. To begin, if you have an existing Facebook Profile, you can invite your friends on Facebook to like your business page by clicking on the Invite Friends link on the upper right side of your Facebook Business Page.

Other ways to promote your Facebook Business page include creating an ad on Facebook to promote your page, and sharing the link to your Facebook Business page and inviting your Friends, family, and/or customers to “Like” the page. Here are some other ways to help increase traffic to your Facebook Business Page:

  • Add a link to your Facebook Business Page in your Email signature.
  • Add a link to your Facebook Business Page in your signature for any forums you are active in.
  • Create a link on your website to your Facebook Business Page, by using Social Plugins, or the PhotoBiz Icon Bank.

Once your Facebook Business Page has received 25 or more “Likes”, then you will be able to create a unique URL for your Facebook Business Page.

To set up your unique URL, you can go to facebook.com/username, or you can also access it by clicking on the Edit button on your Facebook Business Page, then clicking on Basic Information in the left column, and then clicking on the link in the Username section.

Tip:

When creating a unique URL for your Facebook Business Page, remember that the username you select must be unique, and you will not be able to use the name if another Facebook Page user has already used that name. A good recommendation would be to use your business name.

Once you have set up a unique URL for your Facebook Business Page, you will not be able to change it – this is why it is important to make sure that your URL is spelled correctly, and is exactly what you want to use.

Facebook also offers an Insights section for Facebook Business Pages, which collects data and statistics about the traffic to your Facebook Business Page, and allows you to view reports of your traffic. The Insights section provides a useful way of not only monitoring traffic to your Facebook Business Page, but also a way to analyze how relevant the content of your posts are to your visitors.

Another great way to manage your Facebook Business Page is to use applications such as Hootsuite, Tweetdeck or Seesmic, all of which allow you to incorporate a variety of social media accounts into one, easy to manage account. These applications are useful tools since they allow you to set up queued posts for your social media accounts, monitor topics or tags that are relevant to you, and analyze social media traffic for your business.
