“Never stop shooting. Only shoot what you love.” That’s the advice photographer Sunny Szpak-Holly has for aspiring photographers. Szpak-Holly is based out of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. “I have been in my current studio for close to 6 years now. Before that, I was an on-location photographer. Beyond photography I am an avid animal/dog lover/rescuer,” she says.
Szpak-Holly specializes in maternity, newborn, baby, family, and pet portraiture. She estimates about 95% of her work is done in-studio “due to our harsh summers and winters, the ‘outdoor’ season here is short. Fall lasts three weeks if we are lucky.” She loves her photography specializations because she “can grow with families and continue to see them for years. I have clients that I have seen every year since the beginning. Clients that were once newborns are young adults.” Szpak-Holly says these connections become relationships that make her clients feel more like friends than “work.”
Like many, Szpak-Holly first picked up a camera to capture her youngest child after he was born. At the time, she was working a stable, full-time job, but her heart wasn’t in it. She says “I wanted to have a career that gave me joy and flexibility to put myself and my family first.”
How does Szpak-Holly keep her passion for photography alive? “I never stop shooting,” she says. She takes breaks from scheduled sessions and finds something different to recharge herself when burnout hits. “This is usually when I pack up the car, go on a road trip and just drive/shoot. No humans. No subjects,” she says. Szpak-Holly also never stops learning. She says there is “always something new to learn or try. I do not love doing the same photo over and over again.”
Szpak-Holly has been with PhotoBiz almost since the beginning of her photography career. “I quickly found it was my kind of website. Easy-to-use, easy-to-update, and the customer service is top notch.” She also uses PhotoBiz for her blog. It’s great for SEO.
“Creating and updating my site has been great,” she says. She appreciates quick fixes from PhotoBiz’s Passionate Support Team and directions on how to make changes to the site herself.
“Your website should be your priority over social media. If your site is not updated and [doesn’t] contain the information for easy bookings, your potential clients will move on to the next photographer,” Szpak-Holly says. “It's not about being flashy or trendy. Be yourself. Your website should be an extension of you.” We agree!
As for her future, Szpak-Holly says she is happy where she is business-wise. She has an ongoing project called #ProjectGoodDog, where she does “sessions for families who have to say goodbye to their fur babies. I ask for a donation to my favorite local rescue in return.”
She also shared this advice for aspiring photographers: “Slow down, be patient, learn. Learn the business side BEFORE starting a business. If you cannot keep up with basics like accounting or time management, you will burn out so fast.” She says if you are charging clients, it’s a job, not a hobby. And you shouldn’t expect the easy path. “You will make mistakes, we all do.”
We are so glad Szpak-Holly chose PhotoBiz to support her business.
